The Mitsubishi Group (mitsu) is a loose entity made up of the former chaebol of Japan, with mitsu for "three" and bishi for "water chestnut".
The first mitsubishi corporation was Nagasaki shipyard, which was officially run by yitaro iwasaki in 1870. In 1873, the shipyard was renamed the mitsubishi chamber of commerce. Mitsubishi then moved into mining, shipbuilding, banking, insurance, warehousing and trading, followed by paper, steel, glass, electrical equipment, aircraft, oil and real estate. Now mitsubishi has built a string of businesses that have played a pivotal role in Japan's industrial modernization.
